The Story Behind
Our False Starts

Letter From the Editor:

“Whew, welcome to Our False Starts. There are times when you’ll leave with an answer and times when you’ll leave with more questions than you came with. Above it all, I hope you always leave with a thought.”

Meet the Editor:
Bethany Coke

To understand the story behind our false starts, you have to first understand the story behind the individual.

Let’s start with a brief introduction. Hi friends! And welcome to Our False Starts. My name is Bethany, I’m based out of the beautiful city of Toronto and I’m slightly obsessed with the notion of authenticity.

Like many of you, I thought 2020 was going to be the year that I really came into myself as an individual. Now, in theory, I wasn’t wrong but it’s not at all as I imagined.

Little by little, the simple things that had motivated me for so long – were being taken away. Instead of walking across the stage for my degree, I’ll be graduating from my bed. Instead of sipping wine on those pristine Maltese beaches, I’m chugging coffee to get me through the days. And worst of all, instead of starting my new post-graduate job, I’ll be browsing Indeed’s latest job postings.

Lately, life has felt like a rather disappointing series of false start, after false start. Defeat, heartbreak, disappointment – but a small portion of the words I could use to describe how I’ve felt.

Eventually, in the sorrow, I found a sense of camaraderie amongst my fellow human. As sad as I am, it’s not a sadness I have to experience alone. I have friends near that have shared my pains, and strangers far who were suffering along with me.

There’s strength in numbers, they say. And it’s never rang more true. So, I suppose,

“This is me creating a space for individuals, like me, to roam free. To practice new skills and distract ourselves from the pains we feel. This is a space to get lost in conversations that heal. To push us, to push me, to think. To envision a better tomorrow. I welcome you along for the ride. This is my most authentic self. This is my diary, this is your diary – this is thinking out loud.”

Our False Starts, and all its platforms, will read a little like a travel blog. Near and far – you can share your story from anywhere, anytime and any place.

So fellow strangers, fellow friends – we post podcast episodes every Wednesday. Our blog posts will be posted Monday’s and Friday’s. Pop in on our instagram, @ourfalsestarts, to say hello and for a daily reminder that you are seen, heard, loved and whole.

We are new, we are unpolished, inexperienced. Proceed with caution.
